Biography
Hon'ble Mrs. Justice Daya Chaudhary is the President of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Punjab. A distinguished jurist with an illustrious legal and judicial career spanning over three decades, she has made significant contributions to the administration of justice and the development of legal jurisprudence in India.
Born on 10 January 1959, Justice Daya Chaudhary completed her schooling at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Palwal. She graduated in Arts from I.C. Government College for Women, Rohtak in 1978 and obtained her Master's Degree from Kurukshetra University in 1980. She earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1985 and further obtained Post Graduate Diplomas in Personnel Management & Labour Welfare and Public Relations.
She was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in 1987 and commenced practice before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. During her legal practice, she specialized in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, and Taxation Laws. She held several prestigious positions, including Senior Central Government Standing Counsel and Assistant Solicitor General of India, becoming the first woman to serve as Assistant Solicitor General of India before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In recognition of her professional excellence, she was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 26 April 2007, becoming the only woman Senior Advocate in the High Court at that time. She also served in various important statutory and advisory capacities, including Vice-Chairperson, Haryana State Social Advisory Board, Member, Punjab and Haryana State Legal Services Authority, Member, State Telephone Advisory Committee, Member, Administrators' Advisory Council, Chandigarh, Special Public Prosecutor (CBI), and Member, Counselling Centre, Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Daya Chaudhary created history in 1999 when she was elected President of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, becoming the first woman in India to be elected President of a High Court Bar Association. She also holds the distinction of being the youngest President of the Association, having assumed office at the age of forty.
On 5 December 2007, she was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, becoming the first woman advocate from the Bar to be elevated directly as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. During her tenure on the Bench, she authored numerous landmark judgments across diverse branches of law and earned widespread respect for her integrity, judicial wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
Following her retirement from the High Court, Hon'ble Justice Daya Chaudhary was appointed as the President of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Punjab. Under her leadership, the Commission continues to uphold the objectives of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 by ensuring fair, transparent, and expeditious adjudication of consumer disputes, while strengthening consumer confidence in the justice delivery system.
